Scoil Mhuire Christmas Concert 2014

On Tuesday and Wednesday evenings of last week the parents and friends of the Scoil Mhuire girls were treated to two fantastic evenings of singing, dancing and drama. For the past few months teachers and children have been hard at work rehearsing songs, dances and lines for their roles in this spectacular festival of talent. And the hard work most certainly paid off as we were really treated to a wonderful entertaining evening in the surrounds of the school hall. On Tuesday night thee 4th and 5th class girls performed a really lovely production of Annie  and girls from 2nd and 3rd class showed off all the musical talents they have honed from their involvement in music generation. On Wednesday night cast two of Annie took to the stage and gave another outstanding performance. 6th class girls followed to make us all dance in the aisles as they sang some of the lively numbers that they performed recently in City west Dublin when they took part in the “Young Voices “ Hallelujah concert. Both evenings were rounded off with the wonderful multicultural dance group “Daltai” who through dance alone told us the very powerful and emotive story of good versus evil.  This really was a spectacular visual piece full of colour and excellent choreographing.  This was a huge community effort from everybody involved in the school. Well done and thank you all. What a great way to make the Christmas Spirit ring!!!

Daltaí’s Genesis

Seachtain na Gaeilge has always been an important week in Scoil Mhuire, celebrating what it is to be Irish.  Music, song and dance could be heard wafting through the air for the week.

As Europe expanded so too did Scoil Mhuire and we welcomed our brothers and sisters from other countries with open arms.  With them they brought their music and dance to our school.  We incorporated it into our own traditional dance and because of this WE TELL THE STORY OF OUR COUNTRY – how each culture can live together in harmony.

While we are diverse in culture, song, music and dance, we bring our talents together and dance to the same tune.  Each of us has a part in the show of life and together we can make a wonderful performance. Today’s performance is called “One World, One Dance”.

The Canadian Flag flew high above Scoil Mhuire

On Thursday 6th October we were honoured to welcome the Canadian Ambassador Mr. Loyola Hearn to our school.

Mr. Hearn and Ms. Suzanne Cormie were on a visit to Tullamore and stopped off to see what we do in Scoil Mhuire.

We treated the Ambassador and his team to lots of lively entertainment and we gave them a true Scoil Mhuire Fáilte.

Junior and Senior Infants waved their home-made Canadian flags. The choir performed two pieces - Tabhair dom do lámh and You are my brother. Tin whistles and hand bells were featured and the choir performed beautifully.

Daltaí featured next and everyone was moved by their spectacular multi-cultural dance.

Everyone  sang our school anthem .

Mr. Hearn then spoke to the children and teachers. He spoke of the similarities between Scoil Mhuire and his own primary school in Newfoundland. He felt that he had been transported back to his own school-days! Mr. Hearn praised the work of the children and their teachers. He took the words of the school anthem and emphasised the importance of "self belief". He encouraged the children to continue to work with their teachers and to always strive to achieve. Mr. Hearn promised to assist Scoil Mhuire in any way possible through links in Canada; He wished us well with our re-furbishment and extension and he promised a return visit.

The Ambassador was presented with a slate mirror by the Chairperson of the Board of Management and Ms. Cormie was presented with a bouquet of flowers by Aubrey Faye from Junior Infants.

The Ambassador then cut the commemorative cake and spent some time with the staff.

This was truly a very special and memorable day for pupils and staff and one which we will cherish for a long time. We look forward to Mr. Hearn's return visit.

We will post the photos of this memorable visit shortly.

Welcome Anna

Comenius School Partnerships enable Irish schools to create partnerships with other European schools to work on projects which are pedagogically relevant and encourage intercultural exchange. As part of this cultural exchange we are delighted to welcome Anna Szczepaniec from Poland to Scoil Mhuire this year. Anna will be with us until the 29th June and she is available around the school to help students and teachers with all areas of the curriculum and give us opportunities to share experiences of  her Polish culture while at the same time she is learning all about the Irish way of life. This is an amazing opportunity for everybody in the school to share our stories and learn about eachother from eachother. It is a fantastic chance for all of our students and teachers to see the benefits of studying and working abroad and all the experiences it can bring.

Team Hope

Christmas Shoe box Appeal

This year Scoil Mhuire is delighted to continue the tradition of the Christmas shoebox appeal.

Team Hope is the organisation that is running the project this year.

TEAM HOPE is an independent Irish, interdenominational Christian relief and development charity, (Irish charity number CHY 14524).

The people who started Samaritan’s Purse in Ireland in 1998 run it.  Although they are no longer part of Samaritan’s Purse, TEAM HOPE is working in relief and development projects in over twenty countries, mainly in Africa, Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union.

But now it’s an Irish project, they are no longer part of Samaritan’s Purse.
The TEAM HOPE Christmas Shoebox Appeal is new, it’s exciting and it promises to get your box into the hands of a needy child In Eastern Europe, the former Soviet Union or Africa.

They ask you to fill a shoebox with a range of simple Christmas gifts, and drop it to the school before November 10th, and we will do the rest!

The boxes will be checked to make sure that they meet all the customs and safety requirements, seal it and send it on its way by truck or container.  In the receiving country our network of partners will deliver it right into a child’s hands – in hospitals, schools, shelters, churches, orphanages, community centres or family homes

It is easy to take part and your kindness can make a needy child’s Christmas.

Your shoebox can turn just another day in a child’s life into something very special, a day they will remember for years so we would appreciate all the support with this appeal.
